Changing face of women in India

WOMEN as perceived by the society since the beginning of the era…. soft, tender, loving, caring… and so women have differently been integrated into the social and economic systems of their societies. Men typically played the role of providers and women that of nurturer. The role for the women as defined has always been limited to the household chores and various restrictions imposed. They were never accorded an independent status. They have been oppressed to a point where they were treated a completely different species. The society always being male dominant, women didn’t have any rights of their own. They were never allowed to think different or do anything equivalent as their male counterparts. This is the primary reason that has lead to a gender bias in an Indian society.

In the Vedic age the society was dominated by patriarchal system, women were honoured as central points in the domestic family as well as in the society. The Vedic women enjoyed all spheres of freedom in the society.

However, in course of time, their status both in family and in the society gradually started deteriorating and more and more restrictions were imposed upon them.

But with the changing times, the role of women in the society has changed from child bearing and rearing to bread earner. Women now equally perform all the duties as compared to men. Improvement in the education system has lead these change happen. The society has now accepted these changes. In a society where it was once unheard of for women to even be educated, today women have made an advancement to an individualism and are considered a better contenders in the professional careers where men has always been dominated.

Today one can finds women in various types of careers, where they have been successfully. Women have now become independent and professionally successful, they think about their own life and career, and can make their own decisions.

With the achievement of women in various fields, the perception of society has changed. So many opportunities that were once a dream, the tunnel they once envisioned so dark and impossible now seems like a stairway to light, to the open society of acceptance and opportunity.

Various professions such as Engineering, Management,… etc.. which is considered to be a domain of male, now finds many women involved and giving their best as compared to their male counterparts. Enormous changes can be noticed where women has become most important and an integral part in the changing economy and they have given a significant contribution towards the society. Women having a natural gift by nature of multitasking and so can be a better at managing things. She successfully handles all her duties in her personal as well as in professional life.

The structure of Indian society is undergoing a metamorphosis due to industrialisation, westernization and urbanization. These substantial changes have given new challenging roles and status to women. They have become more vocal about their thoughts and ideas by being more creative and imposing those ideas in the work they process. They fight confidently for their own rights when needed.

As the role of women in society has changed and been more important than just being a wife, mother or daughter, the future of women in India now looks bright and secure. Women in India are becoming an agent of change by transforming the perception of people in the society.
